What Causes Toenail Fungus?

Toenail fungus live in dark, warm, and moist environments. The insides of shoes are a perfect environment to harbor fungal organisms. Nail fungus is contagious. Toenail fungus may be acquired from walking barefoot in public places such as the gym, yoga studios, or pool. Toenail fungus may also be contracted from spa pedicures.

What is Toenail Fungus Treatment?

  • It is important to wash your feet daily with soap and water. Dry them well.

  • Keep your nails dry, short, and clean. 

  • Avoid walking barefoot in public places 

  • If you sweat excessively, use cotton socks and change them twice daily. Foot powder use is also recommended.

  • Use an anti-fungal spray

Anti-fungal nail solutions or creams may be prescribed for a localized mild to moderate infection. Prescription oral antifungal medications may be prescribed by one of our experienced foot doctors for severe infections.
