What is a Neuroma?
A neuroma is a “pinched nerve” found in-between the toes, which also causes the tissues around the nerves to thicken. There is a sensation that you are standing on a rock and also a burning sensation that can lead to severe pain. Other symptoms can also include tingling in the toes, numbness, swelling, and pain in the foot when you put pressure on that area. It can also cause you to walk on your heels or the sides of your feet to avoid the pain in your toes which can lead to gait problems.
What are the Causes of a Neuroma?
There is no specific cause of a neuroma, but some people may be more predisposed to suffering from this condition because of the biomechanics of their feet. Flat feet or very high arches can pose a greater risk for developing a neuroma. Injury, trauma, or repeated stress can also cause a neuroma to develop. Improper footwear is one of the main reasons that pain in the toes develops. High heels and shoes that squeeze the toes together are big contributors to neuroma formation.
How Do You Treat a Neuroma?
One of the first steps in treating neuromas is to change your shoes so that they have more room for your toes to fit. If you wear high heels, those with a heel lower to the ground should be chosen. You can also try to use the RICE method (rest, ice, compression, elevation) to help take away some of the pain. If changing your shoes doesn’t help, custom orthotics can be used to add some padding for your foot.
